Camino a los Cuchumatanes

Las famosas "rutas de atrás" son los caminos poco transitados que tanto apasionan a los viajeros que buscan ver la realidad de un país fuera de los circuitos turísticos. Guatemala cuenta con decenas de esas rutas, desde la que va de Huehuetenango a Cobán, o desde ésta última hacia Flores. Sin embargo, los paisajes más lindos que encontré en todo el recorrido por el país, están en la cordillera de los Cuchumatanes: en la ruta desde Huehuetenango hasta Todos Santos. Para hacer la experiencia más auténtica, lo recomendable es hacer el recorrido en los autobuses de transporte público. Eso sí, es importante ir sentado en el lado izquierdo, y del lado de la ventanilla. Hay que sacar la cámara y tenerla preparada: no será difícil hacer fotografías ya que el viaje será lento y en subida constante. El primer tramo es quizás el menos impresionante. Desde Huehuetenango hasta Chiantla hay una distancia mínima, y casi todo el camino está urbanizado. Lo mejor comienza pasando esta población, cuando las montañas se abren y el verde sale a reducir. El pasto parece cortado por los mejores jardineros, los acantilados caen impresionantemente cientos y cientos de metros, las señoras caminan al costado de la ruta llevando a sus ovejas a pastar. Dicen que Todos Santos es el congelador de Guatemala, y tienen toda la razón. Cuando la niebla baja y tanto el camino como el pueblo quedan cubiertos, la temperatura alcanza los niveles más bajos de todo el país. Parece imposible el cambio desde Huehuetenango, el contraste en tan pocos kilómetros. Es un buen inicio para comenzar a conocer la Guatemala más hermosa.
