El auténtico buda Maitreya se encuentra en el templo de Lingyin, en la ciudad de Hangzhou, en la provincia china de Zhejiang, a unos 190 kilómetros de la costera Shanghai.
Es un buda famosísimo y mucha gente acude a esta ciudad solamente para fotografiarse con él. Seguro que os suena de haberlo visto antes en alguna foto o documental sobre China. Es un buda sonriente y gordo. La verdad es que está situado en un sitio bastante difícil para fotografiarse con él, y los turistas hacen verdaderos malabarismos para conseguirlo (tienes que subirte a una especie de escalera, ya que está situado un poco alto en la montaña).
Según la literatura sagrada budista, el buda Maitreya es el “próximo buda”, el sucesor de Siddartha. Es el único buda de la iconografía de esta religión que se representa sentado en una silla. Su aspecto mundano y relajado se debe a la influencia taoista del budismo chino.
