A Mawalamyine, sonnolenta cittadina fluviale del sud della Birmania, il viaggiatore non ha molta scelta. O dorme nello squallido e anonimo albergone cinese a nord della città, o nella fatiscente casa coloniale tinta di azzurro che si affaccia sul lungofiume e che gli stranieri chiamano Breeze Guesthouse. I locali, invece, la conoscono col nome birmano, Lay Hnyin Tha. Per essere sicuri di arrivare, nel caso in cui dalla stazione degli autobus prendiate una mototaxi o un birroccino, meglio -fornire il nome birmano. Che la Breeze Guesthouse, sia fatiscente, non c'è dubbio. Che le stanze, ben che vada, assomiglino più a un retrobottega di macelleria occidentale, è un fatto. Quando non sono dei loculi di legno ritagliati a forma di cella monacale lungo un ballatoio al secondo piano. Detta così, il turista sarebbe portato a fuggire a gambe levate da questa guesthouse, e invece, questo post lo scrivo proprio per indurlo a fermarsi. Molti sono i vantaggi che comporta il soggiornare alla Breeze Guesthouse...Innanzitutto la bella terrazza al primo piano che si apre sul fiume Thalwin e dove la mattina il padrone serve una copiosa colazione accompagnata da una cartolina con l'effige di Buddha e una lista dei suoi miracoli. In secondo luogo la presenza di Mister Anthony, uomo tuttofare, guida nei giorni di ferie, e persona dalle mille soluzioni. In terzo luogo uno staff che parla inglese e che è in grado di cambiare i dollari in kyath a un tasso decente e soprattutto senza formalizzarsi sullo stato della moneta americana. In Birmania i dollari o gli euro li cambiano unicamente se sono nuovi di zecca, stirati, senza pieghe, puntolini o arricciature. Mister Anthony è uno dei rari cattolici che abitano ancora in città. Si informa sempre sullo stato della fede del viaggiatore occidentale che soggiorna alla guesthouse e poi gli spiega come il suo sogno sia quello di poter effettuare, prima di morire, un pellegrinaggio a Lourdes. Se il viaggiatore è fortunato potrà beneficiare della stanza reale, attinente alla terrazza che può ospitare fino a sei persone ed è dotata di letti con zanzariera, bagno e aria condizionata. Un altro aspetto simpatico di questa guesthouse è la presenza di turisti locali e di turisti stranieri nello stesso luogo. La mattina, ai lavandini comuni, i locali indulgono in un accurato lavaggio di denti della durata di 15/20 minuti per spazzolata che farebbe la gioia di qualunque dentista. A colazione, nel sorseggiare un caffè sulla bella terrazza coloniale, possiamo ammirare la sfilata di monaci vestiti di rosso, viola o arancione, a seconda del monastero di appartenenza, che ricevono le quotidiane offerte di riso o altro cibo da parte degli abitanti. Sfilano silenziosi, aprendo indifferenti a coloro che elargiscono loro l'elemosina il grande contenitore di bambù laccato di nero che portano a tracolla. Non sostano più di qualche secondo. E sempre in fila indiana scompaiono alla vista all'altezza del mercato. La Breeze Guesthouse pratica prezzi accettabili. 15$ la doppia con bagno e aria condizionata. 6$ la stanza piccola con ventilatore e senza bagno. 20$ per la camera reale al primo piano (prenotatela per telefono, sempre che riusciate a telefonare...)
