Bolsover Castle
Bolsover Castle majestically towers over the town that bears its name. Built by the powerful Poverel family during the twelfth century, the castle reached its highest glory during the reigns of King John and Queen Elizabeth I (the "Virgin Queen"), who used to visit this castle often. Following this, it was acquired by the Talbot family and later by the Duke of Newcastle (Cavendish family). The castle was remodeled, with some criticism, into a building of protection and defense of the people who served the castle. It was partially destroyed in the Civil War and repurchased by the Duke of Portland, whose family donated the castle to British Heritage who has taken charge of it to this day.
