Jose Antonio Varas
A winery and bullring in a 16th-century convent
This is a family winery which, since 1931, has been producing wines in the famous Matanegra region of Extremadura. It’s currently being run by the family’s fourth generation and has seen its popularity grow thanks to an ambitious wine-tourism project which is currently underway.
This crianza winery is located in the gorgeous city of Zafra. It has a barrel-aging cave, an exhibition center, a wine museum, and a brick bull-ring which makes it one of the most unique wineries on Extremadura’s Ribera del Guadiana Wine Route. All of this takes place in an unbeatable environment: a convent from the 16th-century. The thick walls, high arches, and natural springs make this an exceptional setting for a winery.
