Main entrance to the castle
Okay, this is just a door...but it served as the main entrance to the castle of Newcastle. The door was added to the northern part of the castle in 1250. There were two towers connected by a passage with guard rooms on each side. There was probably a flat roof originally, but in 1618 James I rented the castle out to a rich nobleman who added a new roof and remodeled it inside. Later, it was converted into a public space and renovated again. In the 70's, excavation work started around the oldest parts of the castle, with pedestrian bridges being added in the place of the ruined old bridges. Little
