Centre of Life in the Colony
The chapel was the centre of life for the inhabitants of the colony. All of the community activities were planned there. Until the first stone chapel was built between 1875-1877, just next to the station, the meetings took place in a family home in the colony. Since then worship was held in the chapel for more than a decade, until it was damaged by a storm that ripped the roof off. In 1880 what is now known as "Old Chapel" was built, and it is currently the Bethel Chapel. The Old Chapel was built in 1884 by an independent Protestant congregation. On this site the Chapel New "Bethel" was built in 1913 as a result of a religious revival in 1906, which now belongs to the Union Congregation of Free Christian Churches.
