1 review of Bemposta

Very desirable area

Bemposta is the largest village of Mogodouro concello, set on the right bank of the Douro River, just 26 km from Bragança and borders the Spanish provinces of Zamora and Salamanca in the natural park of the Peaks of Duero. The village has approximately 711 inhabitants making their living primarily from agriculture spread over three locations: Bemposta, Lamoso and Cardal do Douro. It is strategically located at the point where the rivers join Duero and Tormes, because of this it was a very desirable area and therefore had to be defended by constructing city walls and castles, of which today few ruins remain.

The truth is that it is amazing to walk through its streets, some of them so narrow that I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to get through with the car! You get the feeling that you are in a remote village that is still living in the past. the village maintains its traditional mansions and stone facades, its labyrinthine-like cobblestone streets, several chapels and shrines, and XVI century pillory. It also retains its ancestral traditions, as the dances of the "pauliteiros" or masks called "Chocalheiros" of great ethnographic value. However, only 4 Km away from this pure rural environment, there is a magnificent work of modern engineering: The Bemposta dam that crosses the Douro River.
