Lovely Place to Spend the Day
Right in downtown Richmond, a simple footbridge takes you over the James River to Belle Isle, an outdoor oasis in the center of an urban area. The island has history as everything from a nail works, to a granite quarry, hydroelectric plant, and even prisoner-of-war camp, but today it's simply an escape from the daily grind.
On the island, you'll find trails criss-crossing, some leading to the riverbank and shallow patches of water great for wading and cooling off on a summer day. Large, smooth rocks line the banks and you'll often find locals sunbathing, picnicking, or simply enjoying the fresh air. Other trails head inland on the island, providing safe routes for runners and walkers.
