Historic cemetery
Belfast Cemetery is one of the oldest in the city, was bought in 1866 by the Belfast Corporation (now the Council) and was officially opened on August 1, 1869 with its first municipal burial. It has no new plots but they still bury in existing plots and the cemetery provides an important insight into Belfast's history and it's recognized as a historic site. Approximately 225,153 people are buried here including politicians, entrepreneurs and inventors. The cemetery also has recently become popular with visitors due to its impressive Victorian architecture, connections to Belfast and by being immersed in the tour of the Catholic murals (
