Watch a Dog Sled Marathon to see who qualifies for the Iditarod
The Beargrease Dog Sled Race: A sled dog marathon in early February/late January that typically starts in Duluth, MN and goes all the way to the northern border of the state is named after John Beargrease. John Beargrease was a trapper who used to haul up to 700 lbs of mail up from Duluth to Grand Marais and surrounding areas. The sled dog race plays very nice tribute to that history- requiring each racer to carry along a mail bag with them and to submit it to the race officials at the end of the run.
Like any sled dog race, snow is a vital part of making the run, so in past years they have had to cancel the race on account of too little snow.
