1 review of Barcelos Walls: Porta Nova Tower

National Monument of Portugal

Between Largo da Porta Nova and Largo Dr. José Novais, Torre da Porta Nova was an integral part of the medieval walls surrounding the city. It is a National Monument of Portugal and is a fine example of medieval military architecture. It's the only surviving tower of the city walls (there were 3 that coincided with the main entrances). This imposing and sturdy square-based tower is built entirely of granite masonry, with walls 2.5 meters thick and is 4-stories high. It was built in the fifteenth century, although in the sixteenth century (after losing its defensive function) some decorative elements like a Renaissance cornice, gargoyles and windows were added.

In the tower there's a Handicraft Center, where you can buy a good selection of local craft products, including the iconic Rooster of Barcelos. Before the tourist office was here, but it has been moved to Largo Dr. José Novais (just behind).
