A friend of mine gave me a tour of the city of Poitiers, and took me to this small building near the cathedral. I was struck first by the sculpted faces adorning the roof. My friend couldn't tell me if they were supposed to be happy or sad (if anyone knows, tell me!). What struck me later was the age of the place: it was built in the fifth century! What you see today is not the original; it's been transformed over the centuries. It is one of the oldest French baptisteries, and within the front seems more like a bathtub.
