BAPTISTERY of Volterra

1 review of BAPTISTERY of Volterra

Baptistery of Volterra

A baptistery is a place inside a Christian church where they celebrate the sacrament of baptism. In the medieval city of Volterra a beautiful Baptistery was built in the 13th century. It's behind the Cathedral, so it's nice and easy to find. Its octagonal shaped building is covered with white marble on the outside, as well as dark green marble. It has a four-sided, red-tiled dome as well. The interior is simple, there's a large quarry walls covered with very small windows. The baptismal font is very large, white marble in the middle is a statue depicting the Baptism of Christ, this is a work of a sculptor Sansovino name.

The small altar is decorated with a painting of Nicolo Cencignani and dates from 1502.
