Bananas in Madalena do Mar

Madeira è ricca di bananeti. Ci sono piante di banane quasi ovunque. Il bananeto che ho visitato si trova nella località di Madalena do Mar, nella costa sud-occidentale dell'isola. E' impressionante vedere le piante di banane che arrivano fino in cima alle colline, e vedere i raccoglitori che passano veloci per gli stretti sentieri, che consentono di raggiungere anche i caschi più lontani. Un casco di banane può pesare da 9-10 kg fino anche a 90 kg. E ogni casco viene raccolto a mano e trasportato a spalla dai raccoglitori. Il piatti tipico dell'isola è pesce spatola con banana: non poteva essere altrimenti, vista l'abbondanza di questo frutto.

Madeira is full of banana plantations. There are banana plants almost anywhere. The banana plantation that I visited is located in the town of Madalena do Mar, in the south-west coast of the island. It 'amazing to see banana plants coming up in the hills, and see the gatherers who are passing quickly through the narrow paths that allow you to reach the most distant helmets. A bunch of bananas can weigh from 9-10 kg up to 90 kg also. And every helmet is hand-picked and carried on the shoulder from the bins. The typical dishes of the island is fish spatula with banana: it could not be otherwise, given the abundance of this fruit.
