Traditional Castle of medieval nobility
Balvaird Castle is one of the best surviving examples in Scotland today of a noble's castle from the late Middle Ages (ca. 1500 AD), called "Tower House" because its tower was more prominent than in other larger castles. This property belonged to the illustrious Murray family, in particular to Sir Andrew Murray of Tullibardine, awarded as part of his dowry. This family had a very important historical role, in fact the 2nd of William Wallace ("Braveheart") was called Andrew Murray and died at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Getting to the castle isn't easy as it's on a hill on a road from nowhere but admission is free.
