1 review of Balmerino Abbey

Special place

Excellent

The ruins of Balmerino Abbey or St. Edward, is located near the River Tay in the Perth and Kinross. It is currently under the care of the National Trust of Scotland and is in the process of being restored. Access is free and of all the ruins of monasteries I have visited this one conveys the most peace, harmony and gives a sort of religious feeling.

The abbey was founded in 1227 by Cistercian monks from the abbey of the Borders, Melrose. Its foundation was funded by King Alexander II. It was abandoned after being burned in 1547 during the Religious Reformation in Scotland. In 1607, the land and the ruins were purchased by Sir James Elphinstone, the first Lord of Balmerino and the founder of the village where the village is now located.
