Maureen Pies
The grand mother of all spas.
It offers the chance experience the history of humans seeking pleasure through sitting in hot water. There is evidence that the Etruscans made use of the naturally occurring hot springs in the Bormio area. The Romans built baths next to a temple to Apollo. In 1500s the Arch Duchess of Austria visited for many agreeable days of soaking. Her barrel style hot tub is my absolute favorite.
Leonardo di Vinci also took the waters here. In the 1800s they dug into the mountain to create the grotto a with a natural tepidarium, laconicum and caldarium. Plus King Victorio Emanuelle III dropped by for a hydro massage. All of these historic water treatments and many more can be sampled at Bagni Vechi.
