Alleppey Canals
The Backwaters are a network of navigable waterways, between 800 and 900 miles of canals that run parallel to the eastern coast of India in the state of Kerala. These channels have been used for centuries by the local people for transportation, but in current times, they are used mostly for tourism purposes. There are different routes with different lengths, but in our case, we figured that we would make the most and sleep in a traditional houseboat called a Kettuvallam. In the houseboat, we enjoyed a bit of peace amist the very busy India. Most of the routes out of Alleppey head towards different routes, so from there you can see a green, beautiful, with large tracts of palm trees and paddy fields, and see the way of life of the people and that with a smaller boat you get by narrower channels, through the houses, from which they greet children, women wash clothes following their traditional way (hitting the garment against a rock), fish etc.
