No todo son resorts de lujo en Koh Samui. En la isla más turística del golfo de Tailandia también hay hostels de los de toda la vida, regentados y decorados al estilo europeo. Uno de ellos es el Bakcpacker Hostel, en pleno corazón de Chaweng, a tiro de piedra de la playa. El Backpackers Hostel es uno de los lugares más baratos para dormir en Koh Samui. La cama en dormitorio compartido en temporada alta cuesta 280 baths (6,7 euros). La calidad del dormitorio compartido varía. En el edificio principal (donde está la recepción) es muy buena: colchones prácticamente nuevos y bastante grandes, aire acondicionado, balcón, todo limpio, y seis personas por habita. En el edificio de atrás la cosa cambia, todo es más antiguo y no tan ‘divino’. En el precio están incluídas las sábanas, toallas para el baño compartido de ducha caliente (¡muy caliente como te descuides!), toallas para la playa, WIFI (va como un tiro), caja con candado, y todo el café y té que puedas beber. Hay una tostadora y un calentador de agua disponible las 24 horas del día, y también una nevera llena de comida de la que puedes servirte tu mismo y pagar allí en una hucha que hay. Quienes regentan el Backpackers Hostel (un inglés, un americano y un canadiense cuando yo estuve por allí) son muy majetes. Ellos se encargan de sacar a la gente de fiesta según llega y de enseñarles los encantos de la noche de Koh Samui. También de orientarles sobre qué ver y qué hacer.
