Karlsruhe is a relatively young city, though there are many buildings with character. One is the council building, which, although not the first to be built, was erected in 1728 and demolished in 1812. The new building occupies the same site. The building consists of several sections that were built over several years since 1810. The tower, fifty feet high, was constructed to maintain symmetry with the neighboring tower of the Catholic Church Hall. It served as a prison watchtower.
