Fast and efficient means of transport
The Athens Metro is a fast and efficient means of transport in the Greek capital. It consists of 3 lines, the oldest being Line 1, which runs along the surface for the majority of its trajectory. The following 2 lines were part of a major expansion and which took place just before the Olympics. To avoid damaging archaeological sites, lines 2 and 3 were built up to 20 meters deep. The metro tickets cost €0.80 and give you the right to travel across any lines for up to 90 minutes (you can leave and re-enter). Remember that the normal ticket isn't valid for the bus to the airport. To get to the airport, you have to buy a ticket for 3.20€ and catch the bus from Syntagma Square.
Make sure to hold onto your ticket because if the driver asks you the ticket and you can't produce it, you can be fined up to 60 times the value of the city. That being said, I personally did not see a single officer in the 3 days I was there.
