Located near the border of Kenya and a few kilometers from Kilimanjaro, this city in northern Tanzania is a great place to get organized for any safari in this part of the country. Almost all of the trips to Lake Manyara, Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park or Mount Kilimanjaro start from this place. The city itself has nothing super interesting as everything revolves around the safaris. The agencies and tourist hunters dominate the streets. In Tanzania it is quite difficult to get free safaris so you´ll most likely have to hire the services of an agency. Due to the large number of these, it is essential to compare prices and services.
It is very important find out for sure (in writing!) what the prices include. For example, find out the schedules of entry and exit to the parks, the type of food, the kind of lodging and anything else that may be of importance. In the tourist office there is a blacklist of disreputable agencies available for all tourists so you can be sure of which agencies you should not choose. Curiously, the clock tower, located in the city center, marks the exact midpoint between Cape Town and Cairo. There´s also a huge market in the city where you can peruse and purchase a variety of products such as fresh fish, spices, vegetables, fruits and crafts.
