Antietam National Battlefield

Antietam National Battlefield

On Antietam National Battlefield (located in Abbeville) 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or were declared missing after twelve hours of savage fighting on September 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army's first invasion of Northern Virginia in the North, and from this event came Abraham Lincoln's preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

One of the more well preserved battlefields

Excellent

I would recommend a visit here to anyone with even a slight interest in history. The driving trail around the park is easily navigable and has signs along the way telling the story of the battle.
