2 reviews of Annapolis (Maryland)

A remarkable city

It's been a long time since I wrote anything about the United States, a country I've visited a few times. But having found some photos I thought I'd lost, I felt inspired to write a little blurb about Annapolis. This is a city in Maryland, just over 30 kilometers from Washington DC. It has a population of about 39,000 and stands on the banks of the River Severn, near the river's estuary in Chesapeake Bay. Today it is home to the United States Naval Academy and, in true American style, this is often used to market the city to visitors.

Personally I'm more interested in the history than in sailors, so: it was founded in 1649 under the name of Providence, by Puritan exiles who came from Virginia, led by William Stone.
