Agulo

We follow the same road that, after going up the cliff and bordering the mountain, crossing a small bridge, takes us to the edge of the colorful quarter of Agulo, with its three differentiated nucleuses: La Montañeta, Las Casas and El Charco. It is an attractive town, very well taken care of, to safeguard its identity, its narrow pebbled streets and its houses with tiled roofs and orchards.

Agulo was founded by a score of settlers in 1607 and the settlement began shortly after, in 1620. In 1680 it had three neighborhoods: La Montañeta, El Charco and Lepe, a bit farther away. The town was plunged in ruin in 1770, due to torrential rains. Its prosperity came much later, at the beginning of the 20th century, with the implantation of banana trees.

A Calm Town

Agulo is a calm town in the northern coast of La Gomera. Its narrow streets, with low white houses are beautiful. There are many neighborhoods, built on top of two hills. You can discover it by foot, with a sporadic car passing by, but it is off the main road that circles the island.

From Agulo begin various paths if you like walking. La Gomera is the ideal place. Many houses in the town have been restored, painted in the same style as a century ago, the wooden balconies are varnished and the roofs are fixed, giving a lot of harmony to the town. There are a couple of rural houses, in case you want to spend the night.

A Special Town in La Gomera

Agulo is the smallest municipality of the island of La Gomera. It was founded in the beginning of the 17th century by Juan Hurtado de Mendoza and by farmers from the region of Daute, in Tenerife.

In this colorful town, anchored in a rocky amphitheater and continuously looking to the sea, two sectors can be clearly distinguished: the lower area, formed by Agulo, Casco and Lepe and the higher area, integrated by the neighborhoods of Las Rosas y La Palmita.
