The Gijón Aquarium opened in 2006 and is a very modern medium-sized aquarium with striking seaside architecture. It has over 60 freshwater and saltwater aquariums, an auditorium for events, education rooms, and an area of recovery for marine mammals and reptiles. There are about 250 species of animals including fish, invertebrates, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. The sharks are the highlight and they are directly fed daily by two divers. There are organized activities for children to sleep in the aquarium surrounded by marine species. The aquarium is divided into twelve thematic areas: 1.-Asturian rivers.
2.-Cantabrian Zone. 3.-Cantabrian Coast. 4.-Atlantic. 5.-Caribbean Islands. 6.-Cape Horn. 7.-Pacific-Indian. 8.-Red Sea. 9.-Madagascar. 10.-Cape of Good Hope. 11.-subtropical Atlantic. 12.-Puerto Spaniard. It takes about two hours for a complete visit. Otters, though very shy, are one of the most popular aquarium animals, and when they play in the water, they are a great entertainment for children.
